My Tassimo won’t turn on

In this article, we are going to give you an answer to the possible problems that occur when a Tassimo coffee maker does not turn on. That is when the coffee maker does not turn on any light or make noise. We are talking about the problem that the coffee maker seems dead.

However, if your coffee maker is still under warranty, we recommend that you contact Tassimo technical support before reading on USA & Canada (form) / UK (phone).

Signs of a Tassimo maker that does not turn on

Inside the Tassimo coffee makers is a small control board that controls and directs all the machine’s actions, from turning on a light, starting the pump, or inhibiting the coffee maker from brewing coffee.

If a Tassimo were to malfunction, the control board would not allow us to prepare coffee but would warn us with a colored light code about the problem. However, this control board is not functioning when no lights come on or sound is heard.

There are two possibilities as to why the control board is not working:

  1. The control board is damaged.
  2. The control board is not receiving any voltage or current.

Why is my Tassimo not turning on?

We have already said that if a Tassimo coffee maker does not work, it is because either its control board is damaged or it is not receiving voltage and current.

So the first thing to check is that the electrical circuit that carries the voltage and current to the control board is in good condition.

Most coffee pod machines have thermal fuses in the circuit, protecting against short circuits and overvoltages. However, this will not be a component to check in Tassimo coffee makers since most models do not have it.

These are the steps to follow to check the good condition of the circuit:

  1. Make sure that the wall outlet is OK. Plug in another appliance and check that it works.
  2. If a fuse protects the power cord of the Tassimo, check that it is OK.
  3. If your Tassimo has a power switch, make sure there is continuity.

If we check that the electrical circuit is in good condition, the problem is in the control board. Read on to find out how to fix it.

How to repair a Tassimo maker that does not turn on

One of the most important failures that a Tassimo coffee maker can suffer is the failure of the control board. This failure is closely linked to the maintenance of the machine and the working conditions it has had until now.

When a Tassimo coffee machine works in humid or high-temperature environments, water condensation can occur inside the machine, leading to short circuits and overvoltages on the control board.

To solve the problem with the control board, I recommend replacing it with one in good condition, although it can also be repaired.

Buying and replacing the control plate of the Tassimo machine

Replacement control plates for Tassimo makers are hard to find since Tassimo coffee makers are some of the cheapest on the market.

In some models, the control plate costs almost as much as a new coffee maker. So my advice is to look for the replacement plate on websites such as eBay, where these can be cheaper:

Replace the Tassimo control board capacitors

The control boards of coffee machines are not very complicated in terms of the components that compose them, and all brands have very similar designs.

One of the components that tend to fail most frequently is the capacitors. This is because it is one of the elements in which manufacturers usually cut costs.

If the capacitor is to blame for your Tassimo coffee maker not turning on, you will probably have noticed a loss of power some time ago. The coffee maker serves colder coffees, uses less water and the lights come on much dimmer.

If you know how to solder and know little about electricity and electronics, you may be encouraged to replace the damaged capacitor. First, you should note the data on the capacitor and measure its capacitance. If the capacitor fails, buy a new one and replace it.

Use a control board from a second-hand Tassimo

My preference when repairing pod coffee makers is to use used coffee makers. Many coffee makers leak water or cannot pre-purge the coffee pods but rarely have control boards.

Today you can find used Tassimo coffee makers on sites like Facebook Marketplace for as little as $5. If you buy those coffee makers, you will have plenty of parts to repair your Tassimo, not just replace the control board.

I am an industrial engineer by profession, but I have worked in coffee shops for many years, where I have learned all the secrets about coffee machines and coffee. My passion for coffee has led me to investigate and study beyond the obvious, and thanks to this, I can offer solutions and give news about coffee and coffee makers. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I research, document and write here.
